"A Little About Prayer"
This in no way is meant to be conclusive on prayer, but meant to hunger your mind, to learn all you can about this right given all Christians. It is my hope that God's word will place a burning desire in your heart, to spend more time in prayer.
Prayer is as old as man, since from the beginning with God and Adam talking.. Prayer here will be in relation to our talking with our Father in heaven. It is such a privilege to pray, but this privilege did not come cheaply, though it is free, but prayer was made possible to all, by Jesus Christ our Savior. It is not a duty , nor punishment, it is not a ritual, but an opportunity to come into fellowship with God.
WHAT IS PRAYER? Matthew 7:7-11
7..Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:...8..For everyone that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened...9..Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?..10..Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?..11..If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask Him?
Every believer in Jesus Christ is to know we are not only to ask, but have faith enough to seek, and after we find we are to use God's gifts and we must knock... We must pray, find and use...In relation to this study, prayer is an actual talking to God, through Jesus Christ our Savior, or in His name...It is not only asking and praising God, but is listening and following His will...In our relationship with God as with our relationship with our husband or wife, must be shared to be happy and or successful. We must talk with each other, and God has given us prayer to achieve this fellowship with Him..
WHY Should We PRAY?.. Luke 18:1
And He spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not faint;
(a) We should pray because our Father wants us to, we are commanded to,Mat. 26:41.. (b) There is joy in prayer, John 16:24.. (c) It is a sin not to pray, 1 Samuel 12:23(OT).. (d) Because lost sinners can be saved when they pray in faith, Romans 10:13-14.......
HOW TO PRAY.. Matthew 6:9-13
9..After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which is in heaven, Hallowed be thy name..10..Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven..11..Give us this day our daily bread..12..And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors..13..And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen
Christ gave this prayer as a model for us to not duplicate, but to model our prayers.. He gave this model as a direct result of a disciple's asking; Lord teach us to pray as John taught his disciples, Luke 11:1..In this model prayer we are taught to pray to God directly, since we now have Christ in our heart, we may go to God in Jesus name. We are told to ask what we want, and then to be more eager to accept what we need as God's will. We should pray at all times, (good times as well as bad). We should pray for daily forgiveness, needs, and the coming of God's kingdom. We should always pray with faith in Christ to do what we ask, when it is God's will. Prayer is a wonderful blessing, which in itself is a miracle..
HINDRANCES TO PRAYER..1 Peter3:7
Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife, as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
We can pray at all times..1 Timothy 2:8....Man's laws cannot prevent you from praying. We can pray in school, churches, while driving, while shopping and on and on, because we can pray in our heart in silence at any time. However there are mentioned here a few things that will hinder prayer. Unbelief will hinder prayer. Hebrews 11:6..But without faith, it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that dilligently seek Him. An unharmonious relationship will hinder prayer. 1Peter 1 1-7..An unforgiving spirit will hinder prayer. Matthew 5:22,24..Greed and selfishness will hinder prayer. James 4:3..An unrepentant heart will hinder prayer. Psalms 66:18..........(Can you list more??)
WHERE SHOULD WE PRAY?. Acts 12:5
Paul and Silas continued to do the very thing that had placed them in this circumstance. Acts 16:25....Here are some others: Jonah 2:1-10....Jesus on the cross Luke 23:34....(Can you List More??)
We live in a day, many complain about prayer being removed from school. It is not how many papers we hang on the wall, that places God in school or allows prayer. It is how many going to that school and other secular functions that know and believe, what God's word (that paper), says. The devil wants this world to believe he can prevent you from praying. 1 Peter 5:8..He roars, but let me remind you that God gave the lions lockjaw for Daniel, and He will do it for you. If we want prayer in school, we should see that more of those students, teachers and administrators are Christians. One woman did not take prayer out of school, nor did the devil, but it our duty, right and privilege to lead others to become Christians. Then that prayer warrior will attend school.
DOES GOD ANSWER ALL PRAYERS?. John 15:7
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, and it shall be done unto you.
This does not mean if you ask for a purple reindeer that you will get it. What you will get though is an answer, which will most probably be no to the purple reindeer. Romans 5:3..We certainly would not pray to have more trouble, but for example: if we pray for patience we often get trouble. God did answer our prayer, by sending ways to fine tune and help us discover the gifts of patience we had already been given. Many think when they do not get a yes from God, that He is not answering them, when what they got was a NO. Sometimes the answer is wait. John 11:44. They felt if Jesus would have been on the ball, done as they had asked, this would have been the answer. God does answer prayers with yes, no and wait.
To pray you must abide in Him and He must live in you. You must be a Christian to pray. The lost person can pray one prayer; Lord have mercy on me a sinner. Luke 23:42..Once you are a Christian, you pray in Jesus name, and you may now pray for self, others and give God the praise, that you now so want to express.
