"Throw That Mirror Away"

I was looking in the mirror just today and discovered suddenly my hair had turned to gray.

I was stunned the very least to say, for I was blonde just yesterday.

Ice cold watermelon gave me joy and I had all the marks of a little boy.

Little girls could smile and make me blush and for sure my mouth did hush.

A walk down the gravel road was a trip quite long but a time a little boy could be alone and not be wrong.

A cold biscuit from the oven and a green apple from the tree was a snack just right for me.

A walk in the creek and a grapevine for a swing was more fun than any park could bring.

Lying with a friend on the ground and finding shapes in the clouds, was more fun than should be allowed.

Catching lightning bugs to way in the night misplaced all of our darkness fright.

Eating homemade ice cream and holding our heads with brain frost but the taste could not be bought at any cost.

This goodness is still following me today and I believe I'll throw that mirror away.

Psalms 23: 6 .. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Isn't it amazing how much fun we could have with almost nothing. I have ridden a stick and shot a friend off of his stick with my stick. I played outside until I had to go in at night. I went fishing with a cane and a line and dug worms or caught a grasshopper for bait. We had almost as much fun catching the bait as we did fishing. I can't imagine telling my Mammaw that I was bored. She had a hoe and a garden for just such an occasion. My cousins and I rode in the back of a pickup right through town and everywhere else for that matter. We may not have been the sharpest stick in the pile but we're not brain damaged either. We'd never heard of a game boy but after playing out, working, climbing trees, and just being normal kids; Lord have mercy on one that came up to pick on one of us. As I look back now, I am assured that I am not enjoying life as much as I should. In those days it never crossed our mind that one day we might get old. It shouldn't cross our minds today either. Sure the body gets older but the person inside can guard their youth with God's grace. Ok sure, if you play leap frog; be sure the front frog is short and none of the neighbors are watching. Oh fooey! Let them watch! I have a sudden urge to see my kids and grandkids. Keep on the sunny side. May God Really Bless You!. Keep shining and be as good as you can be and when you have a chance; you pray for me.
